We've generally taken the lazy approach to child-proofing and let the kids show us what we need to do. Although we did have outlet covers from the start. As if our newborns were going to somehow get to an outlet and stick their fingers in it!

My girl attempted to climb out of her crib once, got up on the rail, got scared, got stuck, and never did it again. We released her from bedtime captivity when she turned 3, because she was potty trained and needed some freedom. Now, when she wanders into my room at 5:30 am, I'm wishing she were still in the crib.

I found that child-proofing was a gradual process that moved at the same pace (and usually just slightly behind) the development of my kids.

The first thing I noticed with new locomotion was lots of gates, latches, etc. to keep the boys out of places they shouldn't be.

And if it helps, my kid is 2 and he's JUST starting to THREATEN to climb out of his crib. Some kids are climbers. Some are not. Mine falls into the "not" bucket.
