Flight-Training

This weekend, D and I joined the husband in San Francisco. Him for a work thing, us for a cheap vacation thing. Considering I can fly on points, D flies free, and the only remaining sign of my clogged duct is the burning when feeding [is that normal for the rock to be gone but the burn to still be there??], we figured it was as good a time as any to do more flight-training.

And just like last time, this kid of mine? He was AWESOME. He flies like a rockstar, he commands his own seat on the flight home alone with mama, and he gets the attention of ALL the stewardesses to the point that I think at least one of them was seriously considering taking him home when I offered him up... Little did she know he might be all SMILES on the plane, and all DEVIL at night...

Anyway, just like last time, the things I worried about MOST were the things D was best at. Trapped on a plane with a SET group of people to annoy for hours with a multitude of new screaming sounds? Not a problem for this child! Wandering the streets trapped in a stroller for hours and hours and HOURS while mama and dad check out the sights? Again, NOT a problem for this child. Going down in a strange crib with a strange mattress? NOT a problem.

What WAS a problem however, was the STAYING down. Cuz apparently my child doesn't like sharing a room with his parents anymore. Because the entire trip? EVERY NIGHT? He woke up EVERY hour and a half. Just cuz he could. And he didn't just wake up, he SCREECHED up. Like he was being murdered. Slowly. By some wild beast who was tearing him apart limb by limb. And while normally I'd let him cry for a few minutes before going to him, with the husband being there on a work thing, that meant I was going to D right away. Which meant I was going to D every HOUR AND A HALF throughout the night. Which meant the husband was taking D to Starbucks EVERY morning to let me get at least ONE hour of solid sleep.

So while we had an awesome time just not being HERE, and we saw enough of San Francisco to make us want to go back FOR SURE to see more of it, there's also a new fear within me. Not a fear of travel per se, cuz D actually travels pretty well, but a fear of sharing a room with D. A fear of 2 to 3 WEEKS of sharing a room. Because while there IS a chance that the trip was too short for D to adjust, there's also a chance it wasn't just about adjusting. There's a chance he just can't share a room because he sleeps too light. There's a chance that this child who has spoiled me something FIERCE with an average of 1 wake-up per night now, would absolutely DESTROY me for 2 to 3 weeks.

This could be solved by getting a junior suite, possibly. However, I don't think most kids sleep well when they're away from home. My daughter would not and still does not. She's been spending the night at Grandma's since she was about 5 months old, and she just does not go to sleep as easily there. She wouldn't sleep at my sister's house, my friend's house, the one hotel we tried - well, she would sleep, but it would be much less sleep than she would normally get. Just keep trying, and if you want to travel a lot with him, start taking overnight weekend trips (to relatives or wherever) to try to get him conditioned.

wow...not very often do I comment at all.

My kids(all 3)actually always slept in a travel bed...they were climbers and we were broke...it made it easier when we did travel b/c they were in 'their' bed....uh...if we couldn't have a room with a living room...little babybeds always fit in the bathtub

OMG I know the feeling. We had an awful overnight experience in VT with O for my half marathon, and I live in fear of having to share a room with him ever again. Seriously.

I don't know if D goes down to the sound of music, but we have an iPod with classical music and bought a portable battery operated speaker. It will play all night, which is harder for us, but soothing to O. And since it's his routine at home, it's the routine in a hotel, too.

Basically we model his nights after what he sees at home. We bring the music. We bring a nightlight, since he has one in HIS room. We pack some of the toys he now has in his crib. His own blanket, etc.

We also try and get more suite-type hotel rooms so that we have a place for him.

Sorry it was such a rough couple of nights. Here's hoping it's better next time.

The burning could be thrush, I think. Might want to get that checked...

The fear of THIS, exactly THIS is what made us change our plans and I went to Vancouver alone on a work trip last week. (your town is LOVELY by the way, despite the mostly cold & rainy days!)

Oh and also I was afraid of the time difference. Our kid usually sleeps well from 8-3; its hit or miss (often miss) after that. So on west coast time that'd be...5-12.

We do end up bringing him into our room back in the pack n play when we have guests, and he doesn't sleep as well there, either.

I'm a finicky sleeper & prone to insomnia. He must have gotten it from me :)

Have never flown with A, but I hear you on the light sleeper thing. She sleeps well, but wakes easily. I cannot sneak into her room without waking her up (creaky hardwood in old house).

Our first trip with her will be in July (because we are sh!t poor right now), and I'm worried about her sleep too. We will have a suite with a bedroom, and a bed in the living room. My mom is coming to watch her while we attend a wedding. So mom will be in the livingroom bed, we will be in the bedroom with A. We will see how this goes. :/

Have you used hotel cribs? I have no clue if I should just use one or bring my pack & play. (She'll probable sleep worse in the pack & play though...)

Kathleen, I got it checked and it's okay, but thanks cuz I'd rather not run into that kind of shit and not take care of it!

Emily, I called the hotel ahead of time to ensure they had a crib cuz I figured like you that D would sleep worse in his pack-n-play. I brought his sheet from home though, and the toy he sleeps with, in hopes it would help... it didn't but was worth a shot.

Oh, girl, I feel you on the sleep-waking-up-screaming thing! I just called them sleep demons, because my little guy would go from dead-asleep to SCREAMING! And holding, rocking, nursing, wasn't helping! A couple of times, my husband had to turn on the light & sit him up. And he'd wake every 1.5-2.0hrs. Then, a couple weeks later, he popped a tooth out.

Oh. That's why he was miserable! :)

But, I know I heard the whole teething comment for 5mths before mine showed a little white sharp-ie, so I don't want to say the cliche "He must be teething" cuz he may not have any issues now that you're home!? But, sleep demons for us equal teething.

So enjoy reading your posts. I suck @ commenting, but I read all of your updates. Thanks for telling it how it is! :)
